Senate Democrats, lacking votes to stop President Donald Trump’s pick to fill the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat, are weighing an array of tactics to battle back — ranging from bringing the chamber to a screeching halt this year to pushing legislation to expand the court if they win the majority in the fall.

Democrats began discussing their options on Saturday, with senators all vowing a furious fight to keep the seat vacant until next year when a new Senate convenes and when Joe Biden may occupy the White House. And while no specific course of action was detailed, Democrats said they were united on this: They planned to engage in an all-out battle to stop the nomination in its tracks by pressuring four Republicans to break ranks.

Democrats must reform the Supreme Court to preserve democracy

  • Decades of voter suppression, relentless gerrymandering, and an unarguable shift away from democracy are why Supreme Court reform is necessary.
  • Democrats must fight to expand American democracy if they secure the Presidency and the Senate.
  • The fact that so much of our democracy hinges on the fate of a single person illustrates there is something wrong with our Constitution as it is written.

This is what Republicans do. Democrats must realize that they will stop at nothing to secure power. They seize power. Decades of voter suppression, relentless gerrymandering, and an unarguable shift away from democracy are characteristics of the modern Republican Party. The video below clearly shows the ways Republicans rationalize their lies and their hypocrisy. Democrats must fight to expand American democracy if they secure the Presidency and the Senate.

Ultimately, the system is fundamentally flawed. The fact that so much of our democracy hinges on the fate of a single person illustrates there is something wrong with our Constitution as it is written. One person’s passing should never yield a fundamental shift in the way our laws are interpreted.

The Supreme Court’s job is to decide whether or not laws are constitutional. Their job is not to insert their own moral biases. Nine Justices appointed by crafty political maneuvering and fate cannot speak for 320 million people. Considering the ramifications of what the Republicans intend to do, it’s imperative that Democrats fight to preserve and expand our democracy.

I am politically left by U.S. standards, although I'd be considered moderate in most European Countries. I believe in universal healthcare, a UBI, equal opportunity to education, and expanded democracy. I think the free market works best for most industries. However, I am convinced that some industries, such as healthcare and education, do not respond to market forces and should be publically funded. Additionally, I believe industries that damage and destroy the environment should be regulated. My views are my own, and they do not necessarily represent what other people on the left believe. In that sense, LeftViewpoint is "a" left viewpoint, not "the" left viewpoint.
