The letter is addressed to “fellow citizens.” Its signatories “are generals, admirals, senior non-commissioned officers, ambassadors, and senior civilian national security leaders. We are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. We love our country. Unfortunately, we also fear for it.”

It’s absurd that we need this reassurance from retired military personnel, but we do.

The Republican Senate did commit to a resolution that we’d have a peaceful transfer of power. However, they also committed to the idea that they wouldn’t allow a Supreme Court nominee during an election year, and we see how that went.

If we manage to escape Trump’s Presidency with an intact country, it would be nice to move forward and right some of the wrongs that Trump’s term as President revealed. It’s clear to many that we need to reform the structure of our government to expand democracy that has been insidiously taken away, one bad law or flawed Supreme Court decision at a time.

The risk of our nation failing has not higher since the Civil War. Perhaps it’s fitting then, to quote Abraham Lincoln’s final words from the Gettysburg Address.

“…this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Our nation is being tested.

I am politically left by U.S. standards, although I'd be considered moderate in most European Countries. I believe in universal healthcare, a UBI, equal opportunity to education, and expanded democracy. I think the free market works best for most industries. However, I am convinced that some industries, such as healthcare and education, do not respond to market forces and should be publically funded. Additionally, I believe industries that damage and destroy the environment should be regulated. My views are my own, and they do not necessarily represent what other people on the left believe. In that sense, LeftViewpoint is "a" left viewpoint, not "the" left viewpoint.
