More than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and most future population growth is predicted to happen in urban areas. But the concentration of large numbers of people and the ecosystems built around their lives has also been a driver of climate change.

LEFT VIEWPOINTS

  • Cities account for almost three-quarters of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Addressing the GHG contributions that cities account for is one of the most important strategies for addressing climate change.
  • Creating smart cities will help lower GHG emissions, but it won’t stop the planet from warming because the CO2 we’ve already emitted into the atmosphere will remain unless we remove it.
  • Still, cities are a critical part of the picture when comes to addressing climate change.

What would climate-smart cities look like?

I am politically left by U.S. standards, although I'd be considered moderate in most European Countries. I believe in universal healthcare, a UBI, equal opportunity to education, and expanded democracy. I think the free market works best for most industries. However, I am convinced that some industries, such as healthcare and education, do not respond to market forces and should be publically funded. Additionally, I believe industries that damage and destroy the environment should be regulated. My views are my own, and they do not necessarily represent what other people on the left believe. In that sense, LeftViewpoint is "a" left viewpoint, not "the" left viewpoint.
