Two teenagers were killed and at least 14 others injured following a mass shooting at a backyard party in Rochester, New York, early Saturday, according to the Rochester Police Department.

The shooting took place on Pennsylvania Avenue around 12:25 a.m. ET, according to authorities. At least 40 rounds were fired, police said.

This is “truly a tragedy of epic proportions,” Rochester interim Police Chief Mark Simmons said during a press conference early Saturday morning. “Sixteen victims is unheard of.”

We can’t escape the fact that America has a gun-violence issue. This is how U.S. gun violence statistics compare to other countries. The data is sorted by the number of guns per 100,000 inhabitants. This isn’t the only factor — Notice Venezuela at the bottom. However, the highlighted countries are doing something right that we are not.

Other countries have found ways to reduce gun violence without sacrificing the freedom to own a weapon. The following video shows how Sweden approaches gun ownership.

Some problems can’t be solved, but they can be reduced significantly. We don’t need to ban guns to reduce the number of gun deaths in the United States. Licensing is one of the practical ways the United States can keep its guns, lower crime, and reduce gun violence.

Public opinion polls show that Americans strongly support licensing laws. A 2019 survey found that 77% of Americans support a law requiring a person to obtain a license from local law enforcement before buying a gun.9 This support includes more than two-thirds of gun owners (68%).

I am politically left by U.S. standards, although I'd be considered moderate in most European Countries. I believe in universal healthcare, a UBI, equal opportunity to education, and expanded democracy. I think the free market works best for most industries. However, I am convinced that some industries, such as healthcare and education, do not respond to market forces and should be publically funded. Additionally, I believe industries that damage and destroy the environment should be regulated. My views are my own, and they do not necessarily represent what other people on the left believe. In that sense, LeftViewpoint is "a" left viewpoint, not "the" left viewpoint.
