Universal Healthcare

Original article from: Portland Press Herald

No other developed country puts its people through what Americans face when they need health care.

As a charter member of the Bangor chapter of Maine AllCare, I have been an advocate for universal healthcare for some time.

Healthcare for all is the norm in essentially all other developed countries. In those countries, healthcare generally costs less than what we pay for it, routinely results in better health outcomes and is more clearly equitable to all citizens.

LEFT VIEWPOINTS

  • Universal healthcare is the norm in developed countries around the world.
  • The United States stands alone in depriving healthcare to millions of people.
  • Medicare for All is one type of universal healthcare model. It isn’t the only one, and we should learn about how other countries manage to provide universal healthcare to their citizens.
  • The criteria for universal healthcare should be that a person need not have a job to have healthcare. Additionally, universal healthcare should not require means testing, as Medicaid does.

TR Reid explored various healthcare systems around the world and wrote a book called, “The Healing of America.” He summarizes his findings in the following video:

I am politically left by U.S. standards, although I'd be considered moderate in most European Countries. I believe in universal healthcare, a UBI, equal opportunity to education, and expanded democracy. I think the free market works best for most industries. However, I am convinced that some industries, such as healthcare and education, do not respond to market forces and should be publically funded. Additionally, I believe industries that damage and destroy the environment should be regulated. My views are my own, and they do not necessarily represent what other people on the left believe. In that sense, LeftViewpoint is "a" left viewpoint, not "the" left viewpoint.
